Travelling with children with additional needs can be tricky, but here we break down what’s available
Motability
The Motability Scheme is a program in the UK that allows disabled people to lease a new car, wheelchair-accessible vehicle (WAV), scooter, or powered wheelchair by exchanging their mobility allowance for a vehicle, and it includes insurance, servicing, MOTs, and breakdown cover.
Independent Travel Training & School Transport
Independent Travel Training (ITT) is a program designed to help individuals, particularly those with special educational needs or disabilities, develop the skills and confidence to travel independently and safely using public transport or on foot.
Concessionary Bus Pass
Children with disabilities in Tyne and Wear may be eligible for a free or concessionary bus pass. Carers can apply for a concessionary bus pass for their child by contacting the Sunderland Blue Badge Department.
Blue Badge Scheme
Blue Badge is a parking permit that allows people with disabilities or health conditions to park closer to their destination.
Parking across Sunderland and South Tyneside Hospitals
Car parking is free if you have a blue badge. There are car parking spaces reserved for blue badge holders on our Hospital Sites. To park for free you must register your details. Once registered you can park on any of the Trust sites free of charge.
Help available when flying
Airports are busy environments and we know that this can make going on holiday a stressful experience. Airports now offer different options to ensure the experience is more inclusive and accessible for those with SEND.
Travel Equipment
There is equipment available to support you when travelling with your SEND child.
Carer Card At CNTW Hospitals
The hospital values carers and the essential role they play. The Carer Card identifies carers, and recognises the value of their involvement in the care of people who have accessed services within the Trust.
